Norwegian pearls threatened by extinction

Natural pearls produced by the freshwater pearl mussel (elvemusling) have been used as posh jewelry for centuries. But now, the elvemuslings pressens are slowly diminishing from the norwegian fauna.

Such precious natural pearls was even used to decorate the only crown ever made i Norway. (Foto: Lasse Berre)

Goldsmith Hermann Colbjørnsen Øyset created this excessive Heir-to-the-throne-crown in 1846, using pure gold and gemstones. To top it all of, he placed elvemusling-pearls at the tip of the golden spikes.

However, for various reasons the crowning of King Oscar I never took place, the crown was never used. Such a shame…
