Sahara – On the Rocks
Inspired by a freak radio contest, the director of Glassvatt, a small Norwegian insulation company realised they were able to make lots & lots of money by transporting a giant ice cube to the dry desert land of Sahara.

The contest was put forward by Radio Luxenburg and promised (in 2009 currency) 200 USD per kilo ice transported from the Arctic circle to the Equator. The only condition was that no refrigeration could be used to keep the ice cool.
When Radio Lux realised what was about to happen, the backed out of the deal (which would have cost them 550 000 USD/2009 currency)

Even though the money now was out of the picture, Glassvatt Inc decided to go through with the expedition. To make it a bit more interesting they added 300 kilos of medicine/vitamins for a local African hospital to the cargo.
In addition to interest, the valuable medicine made the expedition prone to attacks from guerrilla tribes across the Algerian desert, still they made it through the warm sandy fields, with a little help from The French foreign legion and a domesticated pet-cheetah!

At arrival, the remaining 2714 kilos of ice was cut into minor cubes and tossed to lucky locals. (except a small portion which was spared and used to cool cocktails at the premiere of the expedition documentary)
Later on this have been described as “The worlds greatest publicity stunt”
Right on, i want that energy efficient ice-box right next to my espresso machine!
